Hello RJ families! It's exciting to see how our students are growing and learning everyday!
In 3rd grade, our students are becoming fluent readers and writers. They are regrouping in both addition and subtraction and learning how to work through story problems using the UPSCheck strategy. (Understand, make a Plan, Solve and then CHECK IT!).
Our 4th graders have completed their first personal narrative in Writing Workshop and are starting on an expository text. They are becoming fluent with their math facts and learning all about the pull of gravity in science. Students are earning Steps in reading at a record pace!
5th grade students are honing their craft in writing, learning all about poetry and mastering division and multiplication with decimals. I am so proud of the progress these students are making!
Dads or grand dads, want to participate in our Watchdog Program? Please contact Jeanni Nelson at jnelson@burnetcisd.net
Our students spent last Thursday learning about the importance of Veterans Day. Our Veterans Day community celebration is on Friday, November the 9th from 10:00-12:30. The program is from 10:00am - 11:00am. Lunch will be served to Veterans free of charge 11:00-12:30. The menu is pulled pork sandwiches, potato salad, baked beans, fruit cup, chips, cookie with tea or lemonade. It is very important that we honor the men and women who have served our country. We invite all Veterans and their families to join us on this special day!
Reading Under the Stars was canceled due to flooding. We will combine this event with our AVID/Math/Science night. Events will take place in the gyms. Please come and join the fun! Snacks will be served!

We have Grandparent's day on Friday, September 7th. Grandparents can come eat lunch with their student on this day. Please check with your child's teacher regarding lunchtimes. There will be a lot of grandparents on campus, so we will accommodate the best we can by having a sign in entrance in the front of the school AND at the cafeteria doors by the back parking lot. We want to make sure our grandparents have the easiest access as possible! This is an exciting day at RJ, and we want to honor our wonderful grandparents that touch the lives of our students!
Watchdog Dads information night is Thursday, September 6th at 6pm. We will be serving pizza and drinks. Please come and see what our watchdog program is all about!

Hello RJ Richey students and parents! I hope you are enjoying your summer break. Summer is coming to an end for our teachers, and they are already preparing and planning for an amazing upcoming year! Our staff are working in classrooms, creating surprises throughout our hallways and getting their hearts and minds ready for kids!
Our campus theme for 2018/19 is "Give it all you've got, and then some! Going the Extra Degree" We'll be working together to create a campus where every student and staff member is going the one extra degree. We know that water begins to boil at 212 degrees. At 211 degrees, it sits silent. If we as a campus go that one extra degree with kindness, hard work, and commitment, RJ Richey Elementary will boil over with success!
We will have a few changes next year that parents will want to be aware of:
1) Morning LIVE announcements will start at 7:50. (Students can continue to eat breakfast until 8:00 am)
2) The attendance bell will ring at 9:00 am. This is now consistent across the district. After 9:00 am, a student will be counted absent if they are not at school.
3) District wide: We will no longer accept phone calls, notes, or emails for afternoon transportation changes. Parents MUST go online and make transportation changes by 1:30 using the email link on the district website. An email will be sent to our office receptionist and the information will then be given to the student. After 1:30, no changes for afternoon dismissal can be made for your child.
4) Volunteers: If you would like to be a volunteer on campus (this includes volunteering for field trips, book fairs, classroom room parent, reading with students on campus, Watch Dogs, helping teachers with copies, cut-outs,etc.) you will need to go to the district website and complete the volunteer application. It's super easy and takes about 2 minutes! Once you complete the form, it will cover ANY campus you want to volunteer on. It DOES NOT carry over year to year. Thank you VOLUNTEERS!!!! We will have stations set up on Meet the Teacher night.
Upcoming events:
August 2nd: Returning student registration at RJ 2:00-7:00 in the front gym.
August 16th: Meet the Teacher: 4:00-5:00-3rd grade, 4:30-5:30-4th grade, 5:00-6:00-5th grade

August 24th: No school for students (Teacher Workday)
September 3rd: Labor Day, No school

"Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened!" -Dr. Suess. What a wonderful quote! The school year is coming to a close, and I know without a shadow of a doubt, our staff will miss each and every child that walked through our doors this year! We have continued traditions, and made new ones. We encouraged compassion and hard-work. We established our RJ Richey Pledge to "Work hard, Be nice, and Expect success!". We read, read, read!! We worked hard in math, science and social studies. We tapped into our athleticism, artistic abilities and stepped outside our box to "Start with Hello". I am so proud of our RJ students!

"The truth is our kids are watching and are copying us. Research confirms that children do imitate kind or selfish behaviors modeled by adults.  Adults who talk about the importance of helping others and being kind do influence their children's empathy quotients. We do matter in instilling character in our kids--that is if we talk and walk the example we hope they become. Hopefully, our modeling includes kindness." -UnSelfie, by Michele Borba, Ed.D.
We have been focusing this year on teaching our students to "UnSelfie"...putting others first, and being kind to everyone, whether we know them or not.  We have been promoting the Sandy Hook Promise by 'Starting with Hello' and encouraging students to be kind to everyone. This is a learning process for our children, and we are teaming together with parents and the community to make this a top priority at RJ Richey!
It's hard to believe we are entering our 5th six weeks of school! We have so much to accomplish before the last day of school, and boy are our teachers and students ready for the challenge! As I walk through classrooms, I see students collaborating in exciting lessons, engaged in wonderful books, experimenting in science, working hard in PE and being creative in Art and Music! We are seeing our students grow on a daily basis.Thank you for supporting us as we move full steam ahead!
Here are upcoming dates and events at RJ and the district:

"Anyone who has ever watched a caterpillar emerge from its cocoon as a butterfly has witnessed the importance of providing a bright future for our children. The caterpillar is probably not on anyone's list of the worlds "ten most beautiful creatures". Yet a caterpillar has the potential to be transformed into a list-topping, beautiful butterfly. What does this have to do with our students? Words that picture a special future for a child can act as agents to this kind of transformation in that individual's life." -Gary Smalley, The Blessing.
As we move into February, and our our week of Start with Hello, we want to foster those relationships even further with our students. Being compassionate means to put yourself in someone else's shoes, to try and understand the difficulties they are going through. RJ students, and teachers,  will have this very opportunity this month to help make sure every child feels important and loved!
Friday, February 9th, is Career Day at RJ. This is a time for our community and parents to come together to share with our students the many different ways they can become career and college ready. As an AVID school, it's our hope that every child leaves RJ Richey with a path of advancement toward their life-long goals.
Over the next few months you may start hearing our teachers and students begin to discuss getting ready for STAAR. Our focus at RJ is to make sure students show growth in their learning. Passing a standardized test is very important, but showing that you have met milestones and goals are even more important. Please help your child read every night for 30 minutes, practice understanding problem solving, and hold discussions on what was learned at school and how it applies to their life now, and in the future. These are the best things you can do to help your child prepare for not only the STAAR test, but for life!
Here are some upcoming events for February:

February 5th-9th: Start with Hello Week

                               National School Counselors Week

                                                                January News!
Welcome back to our second semester at R.J. Richey! We hope everyone had a wonderful, restful break.
Thank you so much, parents, for donating all the amazing cookies for our staff to take home for the holidays! Every employee was able to choose a batch to take home to their families. We are so thankful for our parent support!
Before the break, we had students who attended the area UIL event in Kingsland. We had MANY awards and came in second place overall as a district! Way to go, students! We will hand out awards for these events at our awards assembly coming up.
We also had many classes that decided to collect donations for area animal shelters and hospitals during Christmas parties this year. What a wonderful idea, and I'm so proud of our students for thinking of others. Our theme this year is "Compassion", and our students really exemplified this! We are also having a Day of Service coming up in a couple of weeks where students will be able to give back to our community in many different ways.
Another new event we had in December was our very first Start with Hello Mix it Up Lunch. Our Start with Hello program encourages students to get to know others. During lunch, students sat with other students they did not know and had fun with asking questions to each other that promoted conversations. This was such a huge success!
As we enter this new year we want to encourage students to set goals and continue to work hard. Our R.J. Richey motto is to:
Work hard, Be nice, and Expect Success
That is exactly what we believe each and every students is capable of doing! Thank you for all you do to support our campus!

They had popsicles, popcorn, lollipops and celebrated the great effort it takes to come to school everyday! Thank you, parents for supporting us in this area! We love our students and want to see them EVERYDAY!
Last, we had BCISD Administration come and read with our students in classrooms! What a special treat! Thank you for taking a few moments to show our students how much you care!

Off to a Great Start!
This year has started off with students not only learning our state standards, but also about showing compassion to others!  Compassion means to put yourself in another person's shoes and to truly understand what he or she might be feeling. We want our students at RJ to encompass this character trait to its fullest. We are teaching our students to "Unselfie" and be a light to others!
Our students are also learning what it means to be a true AVID students. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID teaches students how to be organized and become college ready.
